How to pay Zakat in Singapore www.zakat.sg

Fulfilling Zakat via the Zakat Singapore website, www.zakat.sg

What is Zakat and why do we need to fulfil it?

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam and an obligation prescribed by Allah s.w.t. as mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah,

“And establish prayer and give Zakat, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves—you will find it with Allah. Indeed Allah, of what you do, is Seeing.”

(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:110)

Linguistically, “Zakat” translated from Arabic means growth. It is meant to bless, purify and grow one’s wealth. For the Muzakki (Zakat contributor), it aims to neutralise excessive love for material possessions and develop gratitude for Allah’s blessings.

“Take from their wealth Zakat by which you purify them and cause them increase…”

(Surah At-Tawbah, 9:103)

For the community, it is meant to uplift the entire community, to spread love, minimise envy, alleviate poverty, and uphold social justice through wealth redistribution.

“…So that wealth does not just circulate among those of you who are rich…”

(Surah Al-Hashr, 59:7)

Conditions & requirements to fulfil Zakat

Now, how do I know if I need to fulfil Zakat?

Firstly, there are two categories of Zakat: 1) Zakat Fitrah (on a Muslim) which is payable only in Ramadan, and 2) Zakat Harta (on Wealth) which is due upon one’s wealth.

In Singapore, we fulfil Zakat on Wealth on five broad asset types, including savings, gold, insurance, investments/stocks/shares, and business. These are the common asset types owned by Singaporeans that meets the condition of al-nama (growth potential) for Zakat on Wealth.

Who should I give my Zakat to?

We know that the options on who to give Zakat to may seem endless, be it relatives, acquaintances, or local and overseas organisations. However, Zakat must be distributed to the eight asnaf (beneficiaries) as stipulated in the Quran:

"Zakat is for the poor and the needy, the amil (those employed to administer Zakat funds), and the muallaf (those who have embraced Islam), for those in bondage and in debt, for those who strive in the cause of Allah and for the wayfarer; (it is thus) ordained by Allah and Allah is All-Knowing and Wise."

(Surah At-Taubah, 9:60)

In the context of the Syafi'I school of thought, it is obligatory to give Zakat to the eight asnaf in your home country, as long as they still exist there.

In Singapore, under the Administration of the Muslim Law Act (AMLA), MUIS is the authorised body responsible for the maslahat (public interest) of the Muslim community, including the Zakat system.

Every year, MUIS appoints "Authorised Zakat Collection Centres", including mosques. These centres are the only ones under MUIS’s governance and purview. View the list of Authorised Zakat Collection Centres here.

Zakat contributed via MUIS authorised centres are also eligible for the IRAS Auto-Inclusion scheme, where your contributions are automatically submitted to IRAS for tax relief. Specifically, under the Income Tax Act, Zakat is income-deductible.

Most importantly, MUIS disburses Zakat funds collected to all eight asnaf in accordance with Syariah. Details on MUIS Zakat disbursement can be found in MUIS’s annual reports which are available here.

It is thus encouraged for the Singapore Muslim community to fulfil your Zakat via the Authorised Zakat Collection Centres or ZakatSG.
