Becoming an Individual Whom Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. is Proud of

Zumratal mukminin rahimakumullah,

Have taqwa of Allah s.w.t. Uphold His commands and avoid His prohibitions. May we always remain within His mercy and protection. Amin.

Beloved brothers,

Know this! Believe this! Indeed, Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. loves us, his ummah, more than we can ever imagine. He s.a.w. once raised both his hands and said: “O Allah, my ummah! My ummah!” and he wept, out of concern for our fate in this world and in the hereafter (Narrated by Muslim).

He also once said: “O Abu Bakr, how I long to meet my brothers.” When the companions asked who he meant, he made clear that he was referring to us, his ummah, who would come after them; those who would never meet him face to face, yet who believe in him. (Narrated by Muslim)

On the Day of Resurrection, Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. will wait for us at the fountain of al-Haudh. He s.a.w. will recognise the members of his ummah who come to the fountain. Sadly, some among them will be kept from approaching the fountain and the Prophet s.a.w. Seeing this, Rasulullah s.a.w. will call out: “My companions! My companions!” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim) Witness this! His love and concern for his ummah know no limits.

Subhanallah, this is the great love of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. for us. Therefore, today's sermon calls us to become individuals whom Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. is proud of. How do we do this? The answer is recorded in Surah al-Hashr, verse 7:

“Whatever (command) the Messenger brings you, take it; and whatever he forbids you from (doing), leave it.”

My brothers,

Making the Prophet s.a.w. proud does not require extraordinary achievements. It can begin with the simplest things that he s.a.w. taught. Be good to your parents, stay in contact with them, or visit them often. Speak to them gently. Be patient in caring for them as they grow old.

Establish your prayers, give salam, wear a smile, speak words that are good and true, be gentle in your dealings with others, keep your promises, visit the sick, give charity, feed the hungry, and help your neighbours and friends. This is the Hadyun Nabawi; the way of life and guidance brought by our beloved Rasulullah s.a.w.

Let us not lie, even if it may seem trivial. Do not betray trust. Avoid hurting others' feelings through our words or actions. Do not humiliate others even as a joke. Avoid spreading rumours whose truth is unknown. Avoid backbiting and stirring up conflict between people. Do not let success make us arrogant. Do not envy others by wishing away the blessings they have. Do not make someone's life difficult when Allah has given us the means to make it easier. Dear brothers, this is the Hadyun Nabawi – Prophetic guidance, brought by Rasulullah s.a.w., whom we love and honour.

May these reminders awaken in us a determination to meet him s.a.w. May we be recognised by him s.a.w. May we become individuals whom Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. is proud of. May it be that when we are gathered before Rasulullah s.a.w., he smiles upon seeing us and says: “I am proud of you, O my ummah.” Amin ya Rabbal 'Alamin.
