Tolerance Ensures Harmony

My dear brothers,

Let us continue to strengthen our taqwa of Allah (s.w.t.) by obeying His commands and abstaining from His prohibitions.

My dear brothers,

Peace and harmony are Allah’s greatest blessings that He has bestowed upon humankind. In times of peace, we are able to practise our faith and go about our daily routines with ease and comfort. On the contrary, without peace, our daily lives will be greatly affected.

Brothers,

Maintaining peace is a responsibility that we must uphold. Humankind has been entrusted to manage this earth. We are responsible to ensure that life on this earth remains peaceful and safe. This is a responsibility not imposed upon other creatures but humankind.

Let us try to understand some of the factors that may threaten our peace. One important factor is our own inability to be tolerant. Our pride and refusal to accept the opinion of others, can spark disagreements that may ultimately lead to bitterness between parties. Prolonged animosity will undoubtedly leave a negative impact in our lives.

A believer will strive to find ways to preserve peace and harmony within the community. When the Prophet (s.a.w) entered the city of Madinah, the first thing he proclaimed was: “O people, spread peace and feed (the poor and needy) …” (Narrated by Imam At-Tirmidhi).

This hadith explicitly tells us that building a nation with civilized society requires a peaceful and harmonious environment. To achieve such an environment, each individual must exercise tolerance and mutual respect.

My brothers,

The world we live in is a diverse one. Each plant and animal have its own unique characteristics. This diversity is what makes our world more interesting and fascinating.

Humans are no different; we come from a multitude of backgrounds and our own preferences. This is how Allah (s.w.t.) created our world and gives it equilibrium.

Our differences and our diversity of views should be a source of strength that unite us and not a barrier that prevent us from working together for the greater good. Allah (s.w.t.) says in the Quran:

Meaning: “If your Lord had pleased, He would have made all people a single community. But they will continue to have differences. Except those whom your Lord has mercy. And so He had created them (to choose freely) ...” (Surah Hud: verses 118-119).

According to Imam Ibn Kathir, our differences on religious and other issues will always exist. However, it should not cause disunity amongst us. Rather it should unite and strengthen our ties.

Therefore, my brothers, we must exercise tolerance in order to ensure that we continue to live in harmony. Let us open our hearts and minds, and not dismiss, or worse still, belittle - ideas that are different from ours.

May Allah (s.w.t.) make us among His servants who open their hearts and minds in accepting different views. May Allah (s.w.t.) strengthen the ties between us. Amin. Ya Rabbal ‘Alamin.

أَقُوْلُ قَوْلِي هَذَا وَ أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ العَظِيْمَ لِي وَ لَكُمْ، فَاسْتَغْفِرُوهُ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الغَفُوْرُ الرَّحِيْم

 

 

Second Sermon

 

الْحَمْدُ للهِ حَمْدًا كَثِيرًا كَمَا أَمَرَ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَن لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ سَيِّدَنَا مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ. اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَأَصْحَابِهِ أَجْمَعِينَ. أَمَّا بَعْدُ، فَيَا عِبَادَ الله، اِتَّقُوا اللهَ تَعَالَى فِيمَا أَمَرَ، وَانتَهُوا عَمَّا نَهَاكُم عَنْهُ وَزَجَرَ.

أَلَا صَلُّوا وَسَلِّمُوا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ الْمُصْطَفَى، فَقَدْ أَمَرَنَا اللهُ بِذَلِكَ حَيْثُ قَال فِي كِتَابِهِ الْعَزِيزِ: إِنَّ اللهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ يَـا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا. اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ وَ بَارِكْ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ.

وَارْضَ اللَّهُمَّ عَنِ الخُلَفَاءِ الرَّاشِدِينَ المَهْدِيِّينَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ وَعَلِيِّ، وَعَن بَقِيَّةِ الصَّحَابَةِ وَالقَرَابَةِ وَالتَّابِعِينَ، وَتَابِعِي التَّابِعِينَ، وَعَنَّا مَعَهُم وَفِيهِم بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ.

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالمُؤْمِنَاتِ، وَالمُسْلِمِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمَاتِ، الْأَحْيَاءِ مِنهُم وَالْأَمْوَاتِ. اللَّهُمَّ ادْفَعْ عَنَّا الْبَلَاءَ وَالوَبَاءَ وَالزَّلَازِلَ وَالْمِحَنَ، مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ، عَن بَلَدِنَا خَاصَّةً، وَسَائِرِ الْبُلْدَانِ عَامَّةً، يَارَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ. رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنيَا حَسَنَةً، وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً، وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ.

عِبَادَ اللهِ، إِنَّ اللهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ، وَإِيتَاءِ ذِي الْقُرْبَى وَيَنْهَى عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنكَرِ وَالْبَغْيِ، يَعِظُكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ، فَاذْكُرُوا اللهَ الْعَظِيمَ يَذْكُرْكُمْ، وَاشْكُرُوهُ عَلَى نِعَمِهِ يَزِدْكُمْ، وَاسْأَلُوهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ يُعْطِكُمْ، وَلَذِكْرُ اللهِ أَكْبَرُ، وَاللهُ  يَعْلَمُ مَا تَصْنَعُونَ.
